Lonjsko polje (Lonjsko field) is the largest protected wetland in Croatia just southeast of Zagreb. The more than 500 km2 of meadows and forests are grazed alternatively by cattle and by fish, depending on whether the area is flooded or not. There is plenty to see and do in and around Lonjsko polje, walking, biking, canoeing, bird-watching, or just laying on the grass under the tree having picnic amongst the horses. You can guess what I was doing.
The starting point was Čigoč, then continued south along the river Sava through small villages towards the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Stoping every now and then to explore more. Čigoč it’s a cute little place full of wooden folk architecture and it is known as the first village in Europe to be awarded the title of European stork village. In this village the migratory white stork has adapted itself to living with the people by building their nests on the rooftops of the houses. The houses here still show the original design, decoration in the traditional wooden architecture and all this a picturesque setting of a linear build village along the road.
The park provides an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity, I visited this gem for the first time and it probably won’t be my last. I was surrounded by the river, endless green fields, forests, colourful wild flowers, cows, horses (some horse poop too) grazing freely and peacefully, all accompanied by the sound of frogs and birds. I cherish these moments at home, on the road, near or far. Travel to me isn’t about the distance, but the moments.
