Šibenik

Croatia

I’m now starting to lose count of how many visits I’ve made to the beautiful Šibenik, a place I sincerely love exploring.

I have this urge to explore and uncover every single day, it’s not often I get to really slow down. There’s no better excuse for that than a vacation in Dalmatia (I already explained term ‘pomalo’ here). I love to learn, and over the years I have been fascinated with learning what I can about this historic place, I’m happy to share some of the most interesting facts with you.

  • Šibenik is the oldest Croatian city (and the third largest) on the Adriatic coast.
  • There are four fortresses that used to protect the city, St John, St Nicholas (at the sea), St Michael and  Barone fortress.
  • Cathedral of St James, gorgeous renaissance monument is a UNESCO world heritage site. What makes it so special is that it’s only built with stone. No wood, nails, or other bonding compounds were used. A method of dry assembly of custom carved stone slabs was used to create this stunning piece of architecture. My favourite part of the cathedral are the heads, more precisely 71 sculptures of men, women and children. This was the first time in Europe that everyday people were put in context of a sacral object.
  • The Jadrija beach is one of the coolest beaches in Šibenik just because it kept its charm from the beginning of 20th century. Changing cabins are real small holiday homes.

TIP: Attend a concert at St Michael’s fortress, overlooking city and the islands, one of the most scenic places to enjoy music in Croatia
