Alberobello

Photogenic Alberobello is primarily known for unique architecture, remarkable examples of drywall construction. Buildings called trulli.

These structures, dating from 14th century, characteristically feature pyramidal, domed, or conical roofs built up of limestone slabs. Although rural trulli can be found all along the Puglia, their highest concentration and best preserved examples are in the town of Alberobello. The town has more than 1,500 wonderfully restored trulli  that have evolved into souvenir shops and restaurants.

Apart from the white houses with unusual roofs and picturesque streets full of flowers, I was slightly underwhelmed by my time in Alberobello. I knew that it would be one of the very popular tourist towns in Puglia, but here everything is subordinated to tourism and wherever this happens in the world it begins to change the character of a place. It reminded me of the Smurf’s village. Still, this place is unique, contains a very important story and I have no regrets about having visited.
