Kazakhstan

Another brief but nostalgia stirring post while I’m trying to catch up on everything.

The Kolsai Lakes are a system of 3 lakes, nestled among the mountains. The scenic Lake Kaindy is also within the national park. I’ve just spent few days in the area with my friends, we were lucky enough to stay with Kazakh family in a small village Saty. Each morning we woke up early, lady would have prepared us breakfast then we head to one of the lakes. We spent most of our time simply walking and enjoying the views and wildlife, but were also treated to an incredible experience nestled high among the mountains overlooking the valley, followed by hot tea in the yurt. One day was snowing and everything seemed to be so peaceful.

The lake Kaindy is known for its stands of dead spruce trunks rising from the water. It was formed when an earthquake caused a landslide that blocked one end of the gorge.

There were only a few stops on our way back to Almaty, and the coolest one was literally market on the road, selling everything you can imagine. Even (plastic) horses. You can find so many wonderful flavours here, yet we bought fermented mare’s milk. My taste buds were not the happiest.

They say that it is the journey that matters, not the destination. This is how I’ll remember Kazakhstan: Open road, beautiful scenery, horses everywhere, the playlists and singalongs.

I hope you like this little photo diary I put together to share my time adventuring through Kolsai Lakes National Park. Let me know if you have visited Kazakhstan and how did you like it. If anyone has any feedback I’d be so appreciative to receive your comments and questions below.
