Miami is like a huge patchwork made of different districts, bad one mixed in with the nice ones. There are a lot of dangerous areas that are close to very safe areas, so you really need to be aware of your surroundings when you’re in Miami.
I visited Wynwood Arts District, a great area with so many galleries, antique shops and one of the largest street art exhibitions in the world, but it’s right next to Overtown which is very dangerous. I had some time and decided to walk from Wynwood to Downtown Miami. Big mistake. If you’re a pedestrian, there are almost no safe places for you in Miami. All infrastructure is designed around cars. Luckily, nothing bad happened to me. I was just under the bad impression for a while.
Downtown Miami is an urban city center, skyscrapers line the sky and make up iconic skyline. For me skyscrapers were a super tall entertainment. Downtown is bustling with activity during the regular business week, but only by day. Unfortunately it’s still desolate at night.
No trip to Miami is complete without a visit to Little Havana. This charming and lively neighborhood offers a taste of Cuban culture in Miami. I really loved food in one of the little restaurants and enjoyed watching men playing dominoes and smoking cigars.
TIP: Be careful, use the car when you visit other neighborhoods and learn Spanish. Everyone is talking Spanish.
