Alghero

Italy

Sardinia was love at first sight. This part of Italy has its own language, culture, cuisine and its own history. Upon walking around the Alghero I didn’t felt like I was in Italy.

Those who know me, know how I feel about cities. I like big cities, the bustle, the noise, the crowd. There are exceptions. Sometimes, a small city can impress me as the big one.

I arrived in the city late at night and first impressions were noisy waves crashing against the city walls. It was dark, I couldn’t see the sea or how big the walls are. Standing there, only thing I felt was piercing sound of waves and the salt in the air. In the morning, strolling along the ancient walls and among its distinctive narrow cobblestone streets, it was easy to read the soul of the city. Alghero has been able to maintain over the time the symbols of the Catalonian domination, offering an irresistible combination of history and entertainment.

The sea is always there in the landscape, every hour brought different light and different colors. The unique colors of the sun setting below the steep cliffs will remain forever in my mind.  The sunset on the promenade is one of the most beautiful natural sights I’ve seen. It was the highlight of the day, every day.

TIP: If you are looking for an original souvenir, Alghero is famous for its red coral jewelry (one of the most prized in the Mediterranean).
