พระนครศรีอยุธยา (Ayutthaya)

I really liked how locals say Ayutthaya, its pronounced ah-you-tah-ya.

What a great journey into the history of Thailand. Ayutthaya is one of the ancient Thailand’s capitals and once one of the largest and most impressive cities in the world. Located 80 km north of Bangkok, sits on an island at the confluence of the three rivers. This city is filled with thousands of Buddha statues with temples as backdrop. It was perfect for the temple hopping. Perhaps the most striking feature of the temples are the abundance of broken Buddhas, but one decapitated stone head of a Buddha has fallen among the roots of a tree and over the many years has become trapped into the wood.

Everything is really impressive and there were many other temples, but the midday sun became too much for me. The searing heat caused me to nearly faint on several occasions.
